Oracle to keep Java open and MySQL alive

In a Register report from a Sun internal town hall meeting, Oracle's President Charles Phillips and it's chief corporate architect Edward Screven are said to have committed the company to keeping Java open and keeping MySQL running as a product. On Java, Screven said "...it would be pretty wacky to try and close that off". The Oracle chiefs also pointed to the fact that MySQL reached "incremental" markets that Oracle's database products do not reach.

The Oracle chief's did point out that there would be job cuts as the two companies were brought together, but also said that Oracle were not planning on spinning off any of Sun's products as separate companies. Phillips said "In 55 acquisitions, we have never spun off anything". They also, according to the Register, discussed Sun's hardware businesses and the future of OpenOffice.org, but the report does not mention if OpenSolaris was brought up as a topic.
