VirtualBox Logo Oracle has issued the first update to version 4.0 of its cross-platform VM VirtualBox desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. According to the developers, the first maintenance update, version 4.0.2, features more than 30 updates, including various fixes for bugs found in the previous release.

VirtualBox 4.0.2 addresses problems related to, for example, multi-monitor X11 guests, the Extension Pack mechanism and several bugs that could cause the application to crash. Platform specific changes include correcting a memory allocation issue on Linux hosts and, on Windows Guests (Vista/Windows 7); automatic logon now supports unlocking previously locked workstations. A bug that could lead to the deletion of an image during suspend, pause or power off has also been fixed. All users are advised to upgrade.

Details about the update, including a full list of changes, can be found in the change log. VM VirtualBox 4.0.2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris from the project's site. Both the base Oracle VM VirtualBox product source code and the binary are licensed under the GPLv2, while the Extension Pack mechanism, which allows third-party sources to implement their own add-on functionality, is licensed under the PUEL.
