As announced by Oracle Java Platform Group product strategist Henrik Stahl on his blog Oracle has announced the nomination of Brazilian Java User Group, SouJava, to a seat on the Java Community Process Executive Committee (JCP EC).

Java and open source software is extremely popular in Brazil and SouJava is one of the oldest and largest Java User Groups in the world, with over 40,000 members. SouJava will be represented by Bruno Souza, a well known advocate for open source.

Souza joined the JCP in 2002 and SouJava joined as an organisation in 2005. If elected, SouJava will be the first Java User Group to be represented on the JCP EC.

This follows recent upheavals on the JCP EC where disputes came to a head after Oracle took over the management of the JCP EC in the wake of its purchase of the previous stewards, Sun Microsystems. In December, the Apache Software Foundation resigned in protest over Oracle's refusal to provide Java test kits unencumbered by a licence that contradicts the terms of the Java Specification Participation Agreement. Independent Java expert Tim Peleris also resigned over the same issue.
