Oracle invests in PaaS provider Engine Yard

Engine Yard logo Oracle has announced that it has purchased a minority stake in the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider Engine Yard. The PaaS specialist's cloud platform supports applications written in, for example, Ruby, PHP and Node.js.

Based in San Francisco, Engine Yard was founded in 2006 and is privately owned; it started with only Ruby on Rails support and has since gown to support a number of other programming languages and environments. The company hopes that the deal will give it access to new technologies and accelerate the development of its products. In its announcement about the deal, Engine Yard stresses that it will continue to operate independently.

Oracle says that the two companies plan to connect their PaaS products to make development across both platforms easier. "We are looking forward to integrating the Oracle Cloud with Engine Yard’s platform to further extend our PaaS capabilities for web application development," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president, Oracle Development. Both of the companies have agreed to keep the financial details of the investmnet confidential.
