Oracle: Java migration to java.net complete

After apparently four years of planning, Oracle has completed the migration of Java to java.net. Until a few days ago, Java had also been hosted on CollabNet, but that old site is now read-only and will shortly go dark.

Oracle's Bob Rhubart, manager for the architect community on Oracle Technology Network, said in a blog post that "The move from CollabNet to the Kenai infrastructure offers more flexibility for developers who want to host or contribute to community projects. Instead of the large, fixed infrastructure per project (for example, several mailing lists per project), Kenai's ala carte features allow users to take only what they need."

The migration was apparently a huge effort, with over 1,400 projects moved, but it did present an opportunity to clean up and remove abandoned projects, so the new site is smaller with a higher ratio of good, current content.

Following it's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Oracle's plan to move inherited projects to in-house Oracle controlled servers and sites was part of the cause of disagreements with development communities. For example, the Hudson project which forked into Jenkins and was moved to be hosted on GitHub. As it turns out, Hudson itself is now hosted on GitHub.

The Java community portal itself is hosted on Project Kenai, originally a Sun open source collaboration and project hosting platform.
