Opsview logo UK-based commercial open source software specialist Opsview has released version 4.0 of the Enterprise edition of its system monitoring software suite. Previously available as an Enterprise edition and a Community version, the Nagios-based Opsview is now provided as three distinct products: Enterprise, Pro and Core.

Opsview Enterprise logo Opsview Enterprise 4.0 features a redesigned web user interface, additional data visualisation capabilities and a dashboard that can be customised by users to show the data that's important to them. It supports monitoring for up to 20,000 devices and can provide reports against SLAs or assist with capacity planning with its data warehouse. Integration with service desks, SMS messaging and change control are also features of the Enterprise edition.

Opsview Pro logo The Pro edition is new to Opsview and is aimed at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 100 devices to be monitored. Like the Enterprise edition, it includes the new dashboard and technical support, but lacks some of the enterprise capabilities. It has also lower entry level price of £1,495 per year. Among the changes is a new SNMP interface poller check which reduces CPU and memory usage by up to 70 per cent by using a single check to poll all of the interfaces at the same time.

Opsview Core logo The company's open source Community edition of Opsview has been renamed Core and also features a number of improvements including the updated user interface – further information about the changes in Opsview Core were not provided, but it can act as a drop-in replacement for Nagios Core, will support monitoring virtualisation and clouds, and will work with Opsview Mobile.

According to its download page, Opsview Core will not be available until next month (May 2012). Until then, the company advises users to download and use the Community edition of Opsview. The company also notes that, as of 24 April 2012, the code for Opsview Community 3.x has been deprecated and no new updates will be made available for that branch as the development focus moves to the Core version.

More details about version 4.0 of Opsview can be found in a blog post and in the company's official press release; updated documentation is also supplied. The Pro and Enterprise versions of Opsview are made available under a commercial licence, while Opsview Core is licensed under the GPLv2.
