Openmoko has announced the release of the Spring 2010 update for its WikiReader. Openmoko Product Manager William Lai said that, "We've been listening to requests from customers for better rendering quality, improved scrolling and we fixed these issues as our top priority for the Spring 2010 update".

The first update to the portable Wikipedia reader features improvements to the on-screen keyboard and to navigation, such as "fluid scrolling" and the ability to quickly find previously searched articles. Other changes include better rendering of math equations, which are rendered as bitmap images, and additional Wikipedia content.

The WikiReader includes an offline version of the entire English language Wikipedia encyclopaedia on a small, monochrome touch screen device with a removable MicroSD memory card, at a price of $99. The three button device is powered by two AAA batteries and updates to the on-board content are available in two ways - as a free 4 GB+ download or via a subscription. Subscribers receive two updates a year in the form of new microSD memory cards at a cost of $29 per year plus taxes and shipping.

More details about the release can be found in the release announcement. The Spring 2010 update, which weighs in at 4.7 GB, is available to download directly from the WikiReader site or as a torrent file and update instructions are provided.
