Less than ten months after the open source Linux-based smartphone was first made available, the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner has been discontinued. The FreeRunner was an unlocked phone that included Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0 and two motion sensors. It's goal was to be the first fully open source hardware and software mobile phone. The intent was to give developers complete software development freedom, allowing them to create new applications and services.

The announcement, made by Openmoko Executive Director Sean Moss-Pultz at the OpenExpo in Bern, Switzerland, advised that staff have been heavily reduced. According to Moss-Pultz, Openmoko will be focusing their attention on a new non-smartphone device, currently being called "Plan B". Details of "Plan B" will be released "in the coming months."

Software development will continue and Moss-Plutz says that they hope that the community will continue to write new programs for the platform.
