OpenWRT Kamikaze pre-release available

The OpenWRT project has published RC1 of OpenWRT Kamikaze 8.09, the first release candidate version of its router software distribution. The new release boasts new drivers for Atheros WLAN chipsets as well as a new web interface called LuCI. LuCI was developed using the Lua programming language and aims to be small, fast, maintainable configuration front-end for the OpenWRT project.

OpenWRT's developers have updated the kernel and the base system (BusyBox, uClibc), and have revised the firewall. Kamikaze replaces the previous package manager ipkg with opkg, which stores the package lists on a ramdisk: the command "opkg update" must be run after each device reboot if new software packages are to be installed.

Kamikaze RC1 runs on routers using AMD Alchemy, Atheros, Infineon or Intel hardware, among others, but according to the release notes, it no longer supports Wi-Fi on older Broadcom devices (bcm4710/bcm94702). The source code, along with adapted firmware images for various router models, can be downloaded from the project web site. OpenWRT is GPL licensed software.
