The second and, according to the developers, last release candidate before the release of OpenWRT 8.09 is now ready for testing. Turnkey image files of the free router firmware are now available on the OpenWRT project's server and source code and the build system, are available in it's Subversion repository.

In comparision to it's predecessor, the developers have improved the stability of the MadWifi driver, updated many packages and applied fixes to the firewall and to PPoE hotplug support. There are also fixes for the Atheros AR231x ethernet driver and PowerPC code. General fixes for the Broadcom 2.4, increasing stability and support for a fixed SSID in ad-hoc mode, have also been applied and performance of the Broadcoma 47xx ethernet driver improved.

One known issue though, is that the workaround for broken Path MTU detection in some problematic ISPs is now disabled by default; if left enabled it created a significant throughput decrease for TCP traffic. If OpenWRT users find that they do have problems connecting to some web sites, the workaround can be re-enabled manually.
