The OpenSolaris developer community has made the first release candidates of OpenSolaris 2008.11 available. OpenSolaris 2008.11 is part of "Project Indiana" which aims to create working binary releases based on the OpenSolaris source code. The announcement notes that the minimum memory requirement for the release candidate is 768MB, with the plans to lower that to 512MB as the system moves to final release. The minimum memory requirement is important, not so much for physical hardware, but for when OpenSolaris is being used within a virtual machine.

One of the more notable changes is the inclusion of pre-built images for USB flash memory devices. This requires a working Solaris or OpenSolaris system to create a boot medium, as the usbcopy script used to transfer them uses some Solaris-specific interfaces. The installer has changed somewhat, as the developers have incorporated enhancements such as the Automated Installation, the Distribution Constructor and support for zones in the Snap Upgrade system. Bug reports and other issues in the release candidate should be filed with the is asked to send it to the Project Indiana bug reporter.

OpenSolaris releases from Project Indiana appear approximately twice a year. The previous release appeared in May 2008 as OpenSolaris 2008.5. In initial testing at heise online UK, we found OpenSolaris 2008.11 installed from Live CD quickly and worked well with our test system.
