OpenShot Linux video editor to add 3D animated titles

The OpenShot developers have announced that they are developing a new feature that would give users the ability to create 3D animated titles in the next version of their open source video editor for Linux. The new feature, called the "Animated Title Editor", uses version 2.5 of the open source Blender 3D content creation suite to generate animated 3D title sequences behind the scenes.

According to OpenShot creator Jonathan Thomas, the long awaited feature will "bring the power of Blender, the creativity of the Blender community (in the form of templates) to OpenShot in the most intuitive interface possible". After selecting a 3D template, users can customise their settings, such as the text, colour, size and font, and render the animation (created as a RGBA image sequence) so that it can be added to their OpenShot project as a clip. The developers consider the new feature to be at an "alpha" stage of development and note that it will not be available until the next version is released.

More details about the Animated Title Editor, including a screenshot walkthrough, can be found in a post by Thomas on the OpenShot blog. OpenShot is released under version 3 of the GNU General Public Licence (GPLv3). The latest stable release is version 1.1.3 from the 12th of April.

Update: The developers have now published a 3D Titles Demonstration Video on their blog that includes previews of various animated titles.
