OpenShift logo Red Hat's platform-as-a-service (PaaS) OpenShift has added the event-driven, JavaScript-running Node.js framework to its selection of platforms offered. Details of how to use the Node.js functionality are available in a separate blog posting.

Red Hat also announced a new look for the service with refreshed logos and web site, and a preview of a new management console. The developers have also renamed the "Raw" cartridge to "DIY" to reflect that it is for users who want to roll their own configurations of "cartridges" (OpenShift's configuration and task container) and have produced a guide that shows how to install a microhttpd server in one.

Despite the name, OpenShift is currently not open source but, in a recently updated FAQ response, Red Hat promise it will be "within the next few months!".
