OpenSUSE developers have made the first and, as they stated in their announcement, hopefully the only release candidate of the upcoming version 11.1 of the Linux distribution available to download. Unless serious bugs are discovered, the final version will appear on December 18.

Numerous software packages have been updated since OpenSUSE 11.0: The kernel has made the leap from 2.6.25 to the current 2.6.27 version. There are many new and updated drivers for X.org 7.4; KDE 4.1.3 makes a much more polished and stable impression than version 4.0 in OpenSuse 11.0. The Gnome 2.24.1 and KDE 3.5.10 desktops are also offered as options.

OpenSUSE 11.1 now exclusively contains open source software which has eliminated the EULA that was displayed on OpenSUSE 11.0 and other previous versions. However, proprietary software, drivers and codecs can be installed easily; RC1 already contains pseudo packages that trigger the installation of Adobe Flash Player and the Fluendo MP3 codec.
