OpenOffice Logo While Oracle had already released Oracle Open Office 3.3 in mid-December, the OpenOffice.org developers have only just issued the ninth release candidate for OpenOffice.org 3.3.0, the next major release of the Oracle owned open source office suite. According to the OpenOffice.org Wiki, this release candidate is expected to be the final development preview before the final version arrives. However, a final release date has yet to be confirmed.

As would be expected at this stage of development, RC9 focuses on addressing bugs found in the previous release candidates and contains no new features. OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 features an updated, easier to use, Extension Manager user interface (UI) and several improvements to Calc spreadsheets, as well as coloured individual spreadsheet tabs and PDF export updates that allow users to optionally embed the standard 14 PDF fonts. Other changes include improvements to document security, a restructuring of the print system, a thesaurus available in context menus and refinements to the Impress user interface.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

Further information about the release candidate can be found in the release notes and on the OpenOffice.org 3.3 New Features overview page. OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 RC9 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Solaris from the OpenOffice.org site.

The latest stable release of OpenOffice is version 3.2.1, which closed two security vulnerabilities and included an updated splash screen and a new version of the OpenOffice.org logo. OpenOffice.org is available under version 3 of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPLv3).
