OpenJDK for Mac OS X presented

Java logo Two months after Oracle and Apple announced the joint development of an open source Java implementation for Mac OS X, the first code has now been published on the OpenJDK project's web site. The "Mac OS X Port Project" aims to produce an open source version of the JDK 7 (Java Development Kit) for Mac OS X. The initial code is based on the BSD port and is said to provide the same functions.

The change modifies the build process so that it generates universal binaries for Intel and PowerPC platforms and packages the files as a .jdk bundle which is recognised by Mac OS X and its Java Preferences as a usable Java runtime. The project web site also includes a Wiki and allows users to register for a mailing list. You can also find the latest news on the project's status web page.

Project Coin, a sort of repository for minor Java language functions for JDK 7, has also taken the next step. The specification of the techniques described under JSR 334 "Small Enhancements for the Java Programming Language" have now been published as an EarlyDraft Review.
