OpenJDK bug database plans changed

Oracle's Mark Reinhold has announced a change of plans for the OpenJDK bug database. The previous plan had been to pilot a public-facing JIRA bug tracking system early in the year and roll it out by July when the legacy internal systems – which hold over 15 years of bug data and that Oracle inherited from Sun Microsystems – were due to be turned off.

Reinhold says that the work to create that new system was taking longer than expected and was unlikely to be delivered "in the next few months". Therefore, the public bug tracker plan is being put on hold while Reinhold and his team, supplemented by several extra Oracle engineers, migrate the internal legacy bug data to an internal JIRA system; the internal system will lack the previous plan's "deep customisations", but the intent is still to move to an public-facing JIRA system as soon as possible once the migration has been done.

"I understand that this news will be disappointing to many; I'm not very happy about it myself" said Reinhold, pointing out though that it would be far worse "if there is not even a working internal bug system for the JDK by the time that Sun's legacy system is shut down".
