OpenBSD 4.8 released

The OpenBSD 4.8 Poster. The OpenBSD Project development team has announced the release of version 4.8, its free BSD UNIX-like operating system. According to developer Theo de Raadt, version 4.8 is the 28th release on CD (29th via FTP) and includes a number of new drivers, performance improvements and new features.

OpenBSD 4.8 features new IKE and LDAP daemons, several network and SCSI stack updates, and improvements to suspend and resume. The developers note that ACPI-based suspend / resume should work on most machines with Intel and ATI graphics chips, however, "machines using NVIDIA graphics will not resume the graphic". The release includes the GNOME 2.30.2, KDE 3.5.10 and Xfce 4.6.2 desktop environments. New and updated packages include Firefox 3.6.8 and 3.5.11, Thunderbird 3.1.1, OpenOffice.org 3.2.1, PHP 5.2.13, as well as X.org 7.5 and X.org Server 1.8 with patches.

OpenBSD 4.8 is available to download from one of the project's mirrors or purchase on three CDs for CDN $50.00 (£30.77). The proceeds support the developers and donations are also accepted. At the time of this posting, the projects site appears to be down, likely due to high traffic because of the new release.
