Forty-two contributors from a variety of open source projects have shared their open source development experiences in a new book entitled "Open Advice". Each author has written a short piece based on their personal experience on what they wished they had known when they started out in open source. Not all of the authors are programmers – contributors also include those who have contributed to open source as, for example, designers, organisers and package maintainers.

The book, which is made available under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) licence, was unveiled at this past weekend's FOSDEM conference. It is available in a printed edition from Lulu.com for $15.50 (£10.01) and should be available from Amazon shortly. Alternatively, it can be downloaded as a free PDFPDF.

The book was edited by Lydia Pintscher, who works on KDE and is a board member of KDE e.V., the non-profit organisation representing the KDE Project in legal and financial matters. Contributors are drawn from a wide range of projects and backgrounds. They include Georg Greve (founder of the Free Software Foundation Europe), Shaun McCance (GNOME documentation), Máirín Duffy Strode (designer for Fedora and GNOME), Jono Bacon (Ubuntu Community Manager), Alexandra Leisse (Web Community Manager at Qt Development Frameworks), Vincent Untz (former GNOME Release Manager) and Jos Poortvliet (openSUSE Community Manager), as well as Dave Neary (long-time GNOME and GIMP contributor) and Dr. Till Jaeger (attorney working with gpl-violations.org).
