The Traffic Squeezer project has presented an alpha version of the identically named program for accelerating backbone data transfer over WANs (Wide Area Networks) and released the relevant sources under a GPLv2 at the same time.

Traffic Squeezer uses various lossless algorithms to compress the data transferred between two devices. Technologies such as these are mainly used in internet backbones and allow more data to be transferred for a given bandwidth. So far, vendors like Juniper, Blue Coat Systems and Peribit have offered data compression appliances in this field. If Traffic Squeezer is ported to a dedicated embedded platform as planned, this will create a budget open source alternative.
