OpenTTD logo The OpenTTD development team has published version 1.2.0 of its open source urban planning and simulation game, the project's first stable 1.2 series release. OpenTTD is based on MicroProse's Transport Tycoon Deluxe (TTD) from 1995 and includes a number of enhancements compared to the original, such as multi-player support and bigger maps.

According to the developers, NewGRF (New Graphics Resource File) support is said to have been "improved tremendously" – NewGRF files are similar to plugins in that they are used to add new or modify existing features in the game such as graphics, vehicles, buildings, objects and industries. For example, while in game, NewGRFs can now display read me files and change logs, as well as licence information. Additionally, NewGRFs can contain clickable links to their author's web sites – existing NewGRFs will need to be updated to take advantage of these changes.

Other changes include infrastructure fixes, river generation during map creation, the addition of support for game scripts which can be used to define goals or provide tutorials, and a new 2x and 4x zoom option, allowing users to zoom in and focus on specific areas. A full list of fixes and new features can be found in the change log and on the project's wiki.

OpenTTD 1.2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux from the project's site. Source code and binaries of OpenTTD are licensed under the GPLv2.
