Market research company Forrester has compared a number of open source Business Intelligence products – and found some big differences. One major finding was that where community versions of commercial enterprise products are available the community versions often offer considerably less than the paid-for version.

This is particularly noticeable in the case of BIRT. Whereas the paid-for Actuate BIRT leads the field for reporting, the open source version, Eclipse BIRT, is just a collection of components unsuited for enterprise use. A similarly large difference between enterprise and community versions was found for JasperSoft, whilst the research found very little and no difference for Pentaho and SpagoBI respectively.

The market research organisation judged Actuate BIRT to head the field for reporting, but to be lacking in advanced analytical functions and data integration capabilities. Jaspersoft Enterprise, SpagoBI and the community and enterprise versions of Pentaho offered a broader range of options and were closely grouped in Forrester's ratings. The full report can be downloaded, after registration, from Actuate.
