Open Recall: WordPress, SugarCon, Etherpad, Ubuntu 13.04

Twenty Twelve, the new default WordPress theme Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to write up as news but are worth the mentioning. In this edition The H looks at a new WordPress beta, plans for SugarCon 2013, Mozilla's hiring of Ubuntu's marketing manager, a new Etherpad 1.1.2 release, Digsby's open source code arriving and the release schedule for Ubuntu 13.04.

• WordPress 3.5 Beta 1 – While the developers "really don’t recommend" the installation of the new beta version of WordPress 3.5 on production web sites, it does come with new features such as a redesigned welcome screen and Retina-display optimised dashboard. As a bonus, the new default theme, called Twenty Twelve, is also included.

• SugarCon 2013 announced – SugarCRM, maker of the open source customer relationship manager software of the same name, has announced the next date and venue for its annual community conference. SugarCon 2013 will be held at The Waldorf Astoria in New York from 8 to 12 April 2013. The organisers are expecting 1,200 attendees to the event.
  

• Mozilla hires Ubuntu marketing manager – Mozilla has hired John Bernard, formerly the head of global marketing at Canonical, to lead the marketing effort for Firefox OS. Before working at Canonical, Bernard was UK marketing director for LG. While at LG, he led the successful campaign for its Chocolate phone, giving him ample qualifications in the mobile space.

• Etherpad 1.1.2 – The developers of the web-based collaborative text editor Etherpad have released Etherpad 1.1.2, which includes an extended API and a reworked user interface for better integration into users' web sites. Loading times of the open source application and the Windows installer have also been improved.

• Digsby is now open source – The Digsby developers originally announced they were open sourcing the instant messaging client in July. The source code is now available on GitHub under its own licence, which is based on the PSF Licence 2.0.
  

• Ubuntu 13.04 release date – The Ubuntu project has published a tentative schedule for the release of the, as yet codename-less, Ubuntu 13.04 release. According to this schedule, the final version is expected on 25 April 2013.
