Open Recall: PortablePython, Scalatron, nPth and JSFixed
Open Recall is a new space on The H for those things which are too small to package as news but are worth the linkage. Open Recall collates the interesting stories which didn't quite make the cut. This edition is all about programming...
- Python on the go – You're on the road and don't want to miss your Python fix? The PortablePython project has just released version 2.7.3.1 of its implementation of Python designed for running the language from a USB stick. It includes libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Django, PyGame, PyQt and PyGTK.
- Learn Scala the fun way – Scalatron is a programming game that aims to teach you Scala in an entertaining manner. As the player, you write Scala code for bots that compete for energy in a virtual arena and try to survive. You can play on your own or organise a tournament between multiple players. Follow @scalatron on Twitter for updates on the software.
- Modern multithreading – The GNU Privacy Guard project has announced the release of nPth, a GNU Pth replacement "for non-ancient operating systems". nPth can be downloaded
from the project's FTP server and a Git repository is also available.
- JavaScript specification discord – The freshly launched JSFixed initiative has different ideas about the future of JavaScript than the developers behind the ES.next specification. JSFixed believes that the ECMA TC39 group, centered around JavaScript inventor Brendan Eich, is not allowing enough input from the community that uses the language on a daily basis.
