Open Recall logo Open Recall is a space on The H for those things that are too small to package as news but are worth the linkage. This edition looks at the first development snapshot of what will become GNOME 3.8, VirtualBox 4.2.4, testing the Flash Player plugin on Firefox and a second release candidate openSUSE for ARM hardware.

  • GNOME 3.8 – The GNOME Project has released GNOME 3.7.1, the first unstable development snapshot of what will eventually become version 3.8 of its open source Linux and Unix desktop environment. The milestone provides a preview of some of the proposed changes and features for the new version; the core and apps release notes detail the differences between the current stable 3.6.1 version and 3.7.1.

  • VirtualBox 4.2.4 – The second maintenance update to the 4.2 branch of Oracle's open source desktop virtualisation system is now available and fixes various GUI, BIOS and storage-related problems. These include crashes on Mac OS X hosts with multiple guest screens, a validation warning regression and problems that caused the application to hang, as well as a workaround for booting from Windows 2000 floppy disks. The change log details all of the fixes in version 4.2.4 of VirtualBox.

  • Testing Flash on Firefox – Mozilla Engineering Project Manager Alex Keybl has asked users to help the organisation's developers and Adobe test upcoming releases of the Flash Player plugin on Firefox. To help improve "the future quality of Flash on Firefox", users are encouraged to use any version of the Firefox web browser with the current pre-release versions of Adobe Flash and provide feedback on the Support web site.

  • openSUSE on ARM – A version of openSUSE 12.2 for ARM hardware is nearing completion: the developers at the project have published a second release candidate and are seeking testers to uncover any last minute bugs. Changes over the first RC include an update repository for the images, the addition of a YaST (Yet another Setup Tool) first boot stage, fixes for booting machines without RTC and packaging improvements. Support for Calxeda Highbank, CuBox, IMX 53 and Samsung Origen SoCs has also been added; a list of supported ARM boards is available on the openSUSE Wiki. Barring any major problems, the team says that the final version should be available within the next two weeks.
