Open Developer Break logo Open Developer Break – catch up on the smaller but important notes from open source developers, for open source developers, from libraries to APIs and from people to postings. This week: a new Node.js version, Red Hat's Developer Toolset, a new CyanogenMod bug tracker and a collection of Apache releases.

  • The latest unstable/development version of the Node.js application server upgrades the included versions of the npm package manager to 1.2.3 and the V8 JavaScript engine to 3.15.11.10. Node.js 0.9.8 also includes improvements to its streams and buffers and to several other components. The console now supports formatting options in trace() as well. The links to download the unstable version are in the release announcement and the source code for Node.js is hosted on GitHub.

  • Red Hat has released the latest version of its Developer Toolset, including the latest stable versions of GCC, the GNU Project Debugger (GDB), Valgrind, SystemTap, Fortran in GCC and other tools for C and C++ developers. The Red Hat Developer Toolset 1.1 is available for users who have subscriptions to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Developer Suite, RHEL Developer Support Subscriptions, or RHEL Developer Workstation. More information is available on Red Hat's Developer Program web site.

  • The developers of CyanogenMod have set up a new bug tracker for the project. CyanogenMod is one of the most popular alternative ROMs for Android devices and, as the developers point out, their existing bug tracker was set up when the project supported two devices, but does not scale well to the current size of the project, which now encompasses versions for approximately 150 devices. The new bug tracker is based on Atlassian JIRA; a rewritten wiki page explains how to use it to report bugs for the project.

Apache Updates:

  • Version 1.3 of Apache Tika, a tool for finding and extracting metadata and structured text using existing parsers, now includes definitions for more programming languages and improves support for several file types. A full list of improvements is available from the Apache Software Foundation web site.

  • Apache Ivy, the project dependency management tool, has reached version 2.3.0 and is now even more closely integrated with Apache Ant. Its compatibility with Maven 2 has also been improved and a number of bugs have been fixed. Apache Ivy 2.3.0 can be downloaded from the Apache Software Foundation's web site.

  • The Apache Commons Daemon has been updated to version 1.0.12. Commons Daemon is a Java library used for starting and stopping Java Virtual Machines that are running server-side applications. New features in the 1.0.12 release include support for UAC on Windows, the ability to build the tool on ARM processors, and several bug fixes. The tool now also gives more helpful error messages should it fail to be initialised during system startup. Apache Commons Daemon 1.0.12 is available for download from the Commons web site at Apache.
