Development Seed President Eric Gundersen has announced the availability of the first public beta of Open Atrium, an open source intranet package. Open Atrium, previously code named '8trees', is "an intranet in a box" that's powered by the Drupal content management system. The team portal starter package features a blog, a calendar, a to-do list, a wiki, a management dashboard and shoutbox. Shoutbox is a private Twitter-like service that lets users share short messages and links with others in their group. Open Atrium is currently available in English, Spanish and Arabic with German and Hungarian translations coming soon. According to Gundersen, a dozen other translations are in development.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and on the features page. Open Atrium 1.0 Beta 1 is available to download. As it's built on the Drupal framework, most of Open Atrium's source code is released under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) and the code that's not covered by the GPL is released under a BSD license.
