According to Henrik Ståhl, who has acted as a kind of Java ambassador for Oracle, the development of the next version of Java is largely on schedule. Ståhl wrote in a recent blog posting that JDK 7 (Java Development Kit) reached the next development stage on 23 December and can now be considered "Feature Complete (FC)". Although this target was reached a week later than planned, Oracle appears to be confident that despite the delay, it will be able to stick to its release plan .

Ståhl also writes that further technologies considered important could still be integrated into the JDK. Among such potential exceptions mentioned by the executive are updated APIs, such as those of JAXP (Java API for XML Processing), JAXB (Java Architecture for XML Binding) and JAX-WS (Java API for XML Web Services) and an enhanced JMX agent (Java Management Extensions) from Oracle's JRockit Java Virtual Machine. However, Oracle's project management reportedly does not expect the exceptions to have any negative impact on the release plan. According to this plan, the release of a Developer Preview is due on 17 February. The official release date of JDK 7 is 28 July 2011.
