Obama's transition site now in the creative commons

As the President Elect Obama organises his team, the Creative Commons group noticed a small, but significant change in the copyright notice of Change.gov, the President Elect's transition web site. They noticed that the site was now licensed under one of their own licences namely, the CC-BY, by attribution licence which is one of the most permissive Creative Commons licences.

The copyright page now reads "Except where otherwise noted, content on this site is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License. Content includes all materials posted by the Obama-Biden Transition project. Visitors to this website agree to grant a non-exclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to the rest of the world for their submissions to Change.gov under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License."

Eric Stuer wrote on the Creative Commons blog, "This is great news and an encouraging sign that the new administration has a clear sense of the importance of openness in government and on the web". Lawrence Lessig also welcomed the change noting "I'm glad the thought in this administration led to the right conclusion, so quickly, and in the midst of so much else going on."
