OUYA console

OUYA and Kill Screen have announced a programming competition for OUYA games with a prize pool of $45,000. From 14 to 23 January, developers can submit prototypes of games that they have programmed using the OUYA Development Kit, the software development environment for the OUYA console. Development can be done completely on a computer or on an Android tablet, which means that participants do not have to own one of the first developer consoles, which were just recently sent out.

The competition organisers do not require finished games – a preview is sufficient, but that preview must be playable, and developers must also publish a video that shows the prototype in action so users can get a feeling for the new game.

Submissions will be judged by an eight-person jury consisting mostly of game developers. The best game will be awarded $20,000, with the winners of five categories receiving $5,000 each. Winning games that are completed and released for OUYA will earn a $1,000 bonus.

The jury will publish the names of the finalists in each category on 11 February; each finalist will receive an OUYA Developer Console as an additional prize. The winners will be announced on 18 February.
