OSADL opens embedded farm for real-time kernel tests

The Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) has set up a computer farm with a wide range of desktop and embedded systems. The farm will be used to continually study various versions of the Linux kernel with real-time patches in a series of application scenarios. Important key data, such as latency, crashes, and memory leaks, will be published on the homepage for everyone to see.

The goal is to be able to regularly check the Linux kernel and real-time patches for problems in a standardised environment. To this end, the OSADL plans to regularly install interim versions of the current kernel development on the farm's computers so that developers can quickly find and remedy any problems.

The computer farm is also intended to ensure quality. For instance, kernel versions and real-time patch sets that smoothly complete tests on all systems are to be labelled as "latest stable". Companies, such as manufacturers of automotive systems, will know that the next "latest stable" kernel fulfils the test criteria at least as well as the previous version. The OSADL therefore also refers to the computer farm as a QA (Quality Assurance) farm.
