Nuxeo has announced a new option for developers who use Eclipse and want to create OSGi-based plug-ins for its enterprise content management system: Nuxeo IDE.

Previously, developers could work within the Nuxeo Studio web-based configuration system, but if their needs were more complex they had to use traditional development tools and develop a good knowledge of the Nuxeo system in terms of deployment and internal operations. With the new Nuxeo IDE, an Eclipse plug-in, the developer has, within the familiar Eclipse environment, a local server capable of hot reloading content without restarting, templates for common web and media content, deployment profiles, and an integrated NuxeoShell, the management and debugging tool for remote instances.

When creating a new plug-in, the developer can make use of automated dependency management, wizards for creating the various Nuxeo projects and, if they subscribe to Nuxeo Connect, they can call on existing Nuxeo Studio models for their code to interact with and get code completion based on those models.

Nuxeo hopes that the new option will open up Nuxeo plug-in development to a wider range of Java developers by providing a familiar environment and reducing the requirement to have in-depth knowledge of the system before producing any working code. Nuxeo IDE is only compatible with Nuxeo Platform versions after version 5.4.2; older platform releases will not be supported.

Nuxeo IDE is available to download free of charge, Eclipse is available to download for all common platforms; Both tools are released under the EPL (Eclipse Public License). The Nuxeo developers are actively looking for community feedback on the tool to help guide future development.
