Novell and SAP have released a specialised version of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SLES for SAP Applications. Designed to ease deployment issues and reduce installation time and costs, SLES for SAP offers – an unattended installation framework to seamlessly load SAP applications onto the operating system, clustering support and a stack validated by SAP and Novell. SAP says it is committed to delivering support for its proprietary software on open source based platforms.

The validation should ensure that SLES for SAP will reliably run SAP applications, such as NetWeaver Enterprise Search, Business Warehouse Accelerator or BusinessObjects Explorer. SLES for SAP also features a separate update channel for fixes and patches which are validated by both Novell and SAP and extends service pack support from 6 to 18 months. Novell's Joe Wagner, SVP of Global Alliances said "This latest offering dramatically simplifies and accelerates the deployment of physical and virtual mission-critical workloads for users of SAP solutions". A 2.3GB ISO image of SLES for SAP, which is based on a subset of SLES 10 service pack 3 and includes the SAP related tools, is available to download.
