Novell and IBM team up on software appliances

IBM loho IBM is to use Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Appliance Programme to deliver a range of software appliances for the various IBM brands. The initiative will allow IBM to deliver plug and play appliances configured with IBM software such as its IBM Lotus Foundations, Lotus Protector, WebSphere Applications Server Hypervisor Edition, Cognos Now! and Smart Analytics Optimiser. Software appliances are pre-customised and pre-configured to contain only the components needed by the applications to run.

Novell logo The promise of the partnership is that it will take "just a few mouse clicks" to configure and deploy these fully tested software appliances to physical, virtual or cloud systems. Novell's Joe Wagner, senior VP of global alliances, said that according to analysts, the market for software appliances could be worth up to $1.18 billion by 2012 adding "Having an industry leader such as IBM adopt software appliances is another indicator of the strength of this market". Novell's previous appliance deals have included Ingres, GroundWork and Zmanda.
