Nominations open for the Free Software Awards

The Free Software Foundation has started the nomination phase of the Free Software Awards 2009. Interested parties can nominate, by email, projects that have addressed important social issues and propose people who have brought honour to free software this year for an award. Previous winners may not be nominated and nominations close at the end of October.

Previous winners of the individual award, "Award for the Advancement of Free Software", have included Linux kernel developer Ted Ts'o, Samba creator Andrew Tridgell, OpenBSD leader Theo de Raadt, Perl creator Larry Wall, Harald Welte of gpl-violations,org and Miguel de Icaza. The award for projects, "Award for Projects of Social Benefit" went to the Creative Commons initiative for it's work in fostering common shared works. Previously, the award has been given to Groklaw, the Sahana project and Wikipedia. Full details of how to nominate are available on the FSF site.
