Nokia gave away one hundred Nokia N810 internet tablets at the KDE Akademy 2008 to the assembled KDE developers and hackers. They also gave another forty N810 tablets to the KDE project for distribution to worthy sub-projects.

The Nokia N810 internet tablet runs the Internet Tablet OS 2008 Linux distribution, based on Maemo 4.0, and has a sliding backlit keyboard, webcam, wifi and bluetooth and integrated GPS, making it an ideal device for KDE developers to scale their software to the smaller screen size and the ergonomics of being on a hand held device. It is also one of the devices that Mozilla's Fennec is being developed on.

The move can be seen as Nokia seeding the development community with their devices as part of boosting their presence in the mobile linux sector. It was welcomed by Sebastian Kügler, KDE e.V. baord member who said "Many KDE hackers have been interested in developing applications for the Maemo platform and now they can. We welcome the Maemo community to work with us on getting the power of KDE available to Maemo users."
