Heroku Logo Heroku, a cloud application platform-as-a-service (PaaS) provider, has announced the availability of several NoSQL databases through the company's Add-ons system. Discussing the announcement, Heroku CEO Byron Sebastian said, “Heroku users and customers are building and running customer-facing revenue-generating web apps that use cloud technology to deliver relevant, timely information, services, and media in a social context on a wide variety of devices,” adding that, “NoSQL datastores are key enabling technologies for this new generation of web apps".

The new NoSQL add-ons include document-oriented databases Apache CouchDB and MongoDB, and key-value stores NorthScale and Redis. Due to their scalability, NoSQL databases are ideal for use in cloud based applications. The NoSQL databases are available from the company's Add-ons catalogue and are currently considered to be in beta.
