The Nexenta developers have announced the release of version 2.0 of the Nexenta Core Platform. The hybrid distribution combines an OpenSolaris kernel with Ubuntu userland, integrating Solaris features like the ZFS file system. The platform is based on OpenSolaris build 104+ (including critical patches), a set of Debian tools and on the software repository from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS ("Hardy Heron" with long-term support from Canonical). Nexenta is a server OS, for the desktop there is StormOS a desktop distribution based on the Nexenta Core Platform.

Service Management Facility (SMF) support has been added to ensure that server applications like Apache, MySQL and PostgreSQL are monitored and automatically restarted if necessary. The release also supports the GNOME and Xfce desktop environments and includes several updates to the latest packages, including Perl, Python and Ruby. According to the release announcement, updating from Nexenta Core 1.0 to version 2 should be a smooth upgrade.

More details about the Nexenta Core Platform can be found in the provided documentation. Version 2.0 of the Nexenta Core Platform is available to download.
