New version of Google's Web Toolkit announced for Q1 2009

Andrew Bowers has announced the plans for the next version of the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) in his blog. The forthcoming version 1.6 is scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2009. It will contain a newly compiled file deployment structure. The new version will use Jetty as its hosted mode server – previous versions used Tomcat. The blog also talks about string and compiler performance improvements. The web framework can be used to compile Javascript from Java code, so that client/server development can be based, almost entirely, on Java.

In other GWT news, an announcement by Red Hat says that it will integrate and support GWT as an important component of its JBoss Enterprise Application Platform(EAP). Rich Sharples, the Director of Product Management for JBoss EAP said "The world doesn’t need another Java framework for developing rich AJAX apps, so we’ve decided to go with what we think is a real leader – Google Web Toolkit". He also noted that full support for GWT would come "in the first half of 2009 as part of a larger initiative". According to Sharples, Red Hat have now signed an agreement to become a corporate contributor to GWT.
