The Dojo Toolkit developers have released version 1.3 of their open source modular JavaScript library. The focus of the release, according to the announcement blog post, was Internet Explorer 8 and WebKit (Safari, Chrome) compatibility and general performance improvements. The 1.3 release also includes bug fixes and several new features.

Among the noteworthy changes are the new base DOM API's, dojo.create, dojo.destroy, dojo.empty and dojo.place, that simplify tasks even further and should allow developers to write very concise code. The new Acme selector engine provides considerably improved acceleration of the CSS query search engine dojo.query. The Sizzle JavaScript Selector Engine Library is also available as a build-time option.

The documentation for Dojo has been "seriously" updated. The developers have included a client-side API parser and viewer that not only covers Dojo, but also Dijit and Dojox.

More details about version 1.3 of the Dojo Toolkit can be found in the release notes. Dojo Toolkit 1.3 is available to download.

The Dojo Foundation is a non-profit organisation that supports and promotes the Dojo Toolkit and is the home of other open web projects including cometD, DWR, Sizzle, and Lucid Desktop.
