Danish software company Composite has released version 3.0 of its .NET-based open source content management system, Composite C1. This is the first major new version since the software was released as open source just over a year ago – version 2.1 was released in March 2011. Previously only available as a commercial product, both open source and commercial products are now available. The functionality is the same, but the commercial version comes with a product warranty, automated upgrades and end-user mail/web-based support. Composite also offers a range of support, training and other commercial services.

Among the new features for editors are the ability to cleanly cut and paste from Microsoft Word and support for directly uploading files from within the editor. Images can be resized and their proportions controlled in place, and external content can be loaded into a web page in HTML format.

The new version also adds features for developers including a new API to enable developers to create commercial packages for use within Composite C1. At the community's request, URLs used are shorter (with no .aspx extension) and their behaviour is controllable from within the console. The software can now be used side by side with Razor, web forms, MVC and XSLT, making the customisation of web sites easier.

Composite C1 is based on .NET 4 and its source code is available to download under the terms of the Mozilla Public License 1.1.
