openSUSE logo The changes at openSUSE continue as the Novell backed distribution opens up. The latest announcement is that the maintenance period for openSUSE releases will be shortening. From openSUSE 11.2 onwards, the support period will be "2 versions plus 2 months", which given the current release cycle of 8 months works out at 18 months, rather than the previous 24 months which has applied with openSUSE 11.1.

The announcement comes in clarification of a posting detailing the plan to discontinue support for openSUSE 10.3 after October 31st 2009. Updates and support for current openSUSE releases will continue as previously planned, with openSUSE 11.0 supported until June 2010 and 11.1 until December 2010. The announcement also makes it clear that these changes do not affect the maintenance cycle for SUSE Linux Enterprise products which have longer support periods.
