The Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) recommends the RT-Preempt realtime Linux kernel 2.6.26.8-rt16 as latest stable version, based on the 2.6.26 standard kernel. Until now the patch set was only available for the older 2.6.24 kernel.

Two new and important features are the device tree support and improved kernel cache management of the video buffer. The Device Tree is based on the Open Firmware implementation (IEEE 1275-1994) allowing for simpler hardware management.

The improved kernel cache management makes it possible to use hardware accelerated 3D graphics, in a real-time system, without any side effects. There is, however, one minor restriction found in tests by OASDL. Some latencies in the range of several milliseconds occur when the graphics board is initialised for the first time. The release has a large number of bug fixes and the new features and major drivers in the robust real-time kernel should benefit users of 2.6.26, compared to the somewhat old 2.6.24 kernel.
