Adobe OS logo Adobe has released the Open Source Media Framework (OSMF) and the Text Layout Framework (TLF) as open source under the Mozilla Public Licence, to address what the company sees as the needs of developers, publishers and media companies.

The OSMF offers an easily programmed Media Player framework optimised for the Flash platform. It offers the standard features for the playback of streaming videos or other dynamic content, but also provides a plug-in API to allow third parties to integrate their own components.

The Text Layout Framework, an extensible ActionScript library, offers better typographic support for web applications with complex languages, bidirectional text and layout options for several languages. It builds upon the new text engine in Flash Player 10 and Adobe AIR 1.5.

Despite the announcement, the Adobe Flash Player remains closed source. Adobe is making use of open source methods to make it easier for developers to work with its proprietary platform.
