The Free Software Foundation has announced the appointment of John Sullivan as executive director, replacing Peter T Brown who has stepped down from the position he took up in 2005. Brown described his successor as "awesome" in a posting which thanked Sullivan and the FSF staff for their support. Brown plans to take a short break and then begin "looking for a new challenge".

Sullivan has worked for the FSF since 2003 and been operations manager since 2007 coordinating campaigns such as DefectiveByDesign, Windows 7 Sins and PlayOgg!. Sullivan said he was looking forward to working closely with FSF president Richard Stallman, currently in the UK as part of a European speaking tour. He added that he was "especially interested in our projects to promote free software adoption in public and educational institutions, in doing what we can to make GNU and the rest of the free software movement a welcoming, positive place for everyone" and planned to continue campaigning against companies who "take freedom from individuals to make a buck".
