New Zealand leads the way in terms of open data

New Zealand Flag As part of its Open Government Data and Information program, the New Zealand Cabinet has approved a Declaration on Open and Transparent Government. At the heart of the declaration is the government's commitment that the data and information held on behalf of the public must be readily available, without charge where possible, and without any usage restrictions.

Releasing the government data is intended to help create a more efficient and accountable public sector, and a greater level of participation in shaping government decisions. It is also intended to promote the alignment of central, regional and local government programs and business initiatives, both political and economic. Other taxpayer-funded data is to benefit the country's educational system and scientific research programs.

On data.govt.nz, users already have access to 1,600 New Zealand government data records – ranging from geolocation data and economic, health and educational statistics to a list of all Māori organisations. The Open NZ wiki offers information on a variety of open data projects in New Zealand.
