New Shotwell release brings photo straightening tool

The photo straightening feature in Shotwell 0.12.0

The Yorba Foundation has announced the release of the newest version of its Shotwell photo organiser. Shotwell 0.12.0 adds the ability to straighten photos, support for GTK+ 3, the ability to recognise more Android devices for photo import, and more.

Users now have the option to straighten photos by horizontally or vertically tilting the picture by using a superimposed grid. This functionality helps photographers correct shots that were not lined up correctly when they were taken. Additionally, Shotwell has now added OAuth authentication when uploading images to Flickr and gives users the ability to save searches of photos that are tagged with certain strings.

Shotwell is an open source photo management and editing package released by the non-profit Yorba Foundation and aimed primarily at the GNOME desktop. It aims to provide a complete photography workflow similar to applications such as Photoshop Lightroom, albeit for Linux. Shotwell is still under heavy development, however, and its features do not yet stack up to a professional tool such as Lightroom.
