Xamarin, the main force behind development of the open source implementation of C# and .NET, Mono, has announced three new releases. The company has released new versions of its commercial mobile application development tools Mono for Android (version 4.2.5) and MonoTouch (version 5.4 – for iOS), and of its open source integrated development environment (IDE) MonoDevelop (version 3.0.4).

The MonoDevelop development environment benefits from performance improvements as well as a new virtual resource folder for less cluttered projects and build archive support for MonoTouch and MonoMac projects. Other enhancements include improved version control support, enhanced ASP.NET MVC2 and MVC3 support, fixed "Retina" display support and a more robust Android deployment system.

Mono for Android now supports newer Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean" devices running API Level 16, such as the Nexus 7 tablet. As well as fixing a number of bugs, this also includes Android NDK bitmap support with the namespace android.graphics.Bitmap. The new version of MonoTouch promises both smaller binaries and faster code execution. It now supports OpenGL/CodeVideo and CoreMIDI and the ability to write your own NSUrlProtocol handlers. C# idioms can now be entered for gesture recognizers. Strong typing for notifications and cross-thread UI checks will also help developers create bug-free apps.

All of the new releases are available from the Xamarin update channels in MonoDevelop and Visual Studio. MonoDevelop source and binaries for openSUSE, SUSE Linux Enterprise, Debian, Ubuntu, Windows and Mac OS X are available from the project's download page.

Customers with update subscriptions can download MonoTouch and Mono for Android via their Xamarin Store accounts. Trial versions are also available, but apps created using these versions are limited to only running in emulators, not on actual hardware.
