New Google Summer of Code statistics posted

Google has posted new statistics about its 2005 to 2009 Summer of Code (GSoC) contests which offer university students stipends to write and develop code for various open source projects. In a post to the Open Source at Google blog, Google Developer Relations Specialist Cat Allman confirms that a total of 591 schools, including 199 new schools, were represented for this years Google Summer of Code. The 591 schools represented a total of 81 countries, including seven countries that have not previously participated.

This years top school according to number of accepted students was the University of Moratuwa (Sri Lanka) with 22 students, followed by the University of Campinas / UNICAMP (Brazil) with 12 and the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) with 11. The top overall school for 2005 to 2009 was the University of Moratuwa with 79, followed by the University of Campinas with 37 and the University of Toronto (Canada) with 34.
