Netgear has announced the release of its WNR3500L Wireless-N router that comes pre-loaded with Linux-based firmware. In addition to Gigabit ethernet and a USB 2.0 connection for external storage or a USB 3G modem, the WNR3500L features a 480 MHz MIPS processor, 8 MB of flash memory and 64 MB of RAM.

Netgears latest Wireless-N router can run a variety of open source router firmware – from DD-WRT and OpenWrt to the HyperWRT-based Tomato. Compatible versions of the various firmware packages are available to download from Netgear's myopenrouter.com community website. The WRT3500L's original firmware binary based on the 2.4.20 Linux kernel and its source code are also available.

More details about the wireless router can be found on the WNR3500L product page and in the provided data sheetPDF. According to Netgear, the router will be available in "Fall 2009" and will retail for $139.99 in the US. Netgear were unable to confirm dates or prices for the UK at press time.

Update - Netgear has been criticised over the presence of binary only drivers in the source code for the firmware by Harald Welte, founder of gpl-violations.org.
